Introduction

This programme is only offered in Danish.

Work with educational practice has as its starting point an understanding of the interaction between people and the socio-cultural framework in which they live and work. The programme rests on research-based theories and methods concerning people's upbringing, learning, teaching and educational processes. Focus is on the processes through which people and their socio-cultural living conditions mutually shape each other in different ways.

The programme will enable students to:

  • reflect critically on their own practice
  • relate to others' forms of practice and discourses in an open, reflective, and constructive way
  • enter into a dialogue with other professional approaches and be able to drawn on others' viewpoints in their own practice
  • develop a critical-sensitive eye for inclusion and exclusion processes in education.

Admission requirements

Admission to the Master's Degree Programme in General Education requires that you have completed one of the following courses of study:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, sociology or education science
  • Any other Bachelor's degree programme with modules in education equivalent to 30 ECTS
  • Bachelor's degree in education, social education, nursing, social work or in relaxation and psychomotor therapy.

You will be admitted to the degree programmes based solely on your qualifying course of study. It is therefore not possible to become further qualified. The assessment of applicants is based on whether the admission requirements are met. Work experience is not included in the assessment of the qualifying course of study.

Admission on other terms

Following individual assessment, Aarhus University may grant admission to the degree programme for applicants who do not meet the educational requirements but who are deemed to have the necessary qualifications to be able to complete the degree programme. Work experience is not included in the assessment; only formal education is assessed.

If you apply for admission to a Master's degree programme on the basis of a course of study which is not described as qualifying in the academic regulations for the Master's degree programme(s) to which you are applying, you must enclose a description of your educational background as well as documentation of this. To enable an assessment of your educational background to be made, the following requirements must be met:

1. Your educational background must be on a par with that of the qualifying course of study which is described in the academic regulations for the Master's degree programme.

2. Your educational background must have a scope of at least three years of full-time study – equivalent to 180 ECTS credits.

3. Your educational background must be academically relevant.

4. If your educational background is composed of different modules and/or courses of study at multiple universities/educational institutions, and if you want to be admitted on this basis, you must enclose a summary of your entire educational background. The summary must include the titles of the modules and/or courses of study you have passed, the year in which they were passed and the names of the various educational institutions.

5. The documentation of your educational background must include: a) a description of the purpose, content, level and duration of the course of study, e.g. in the form of academic regulations, and b) documentation that you have passed/completed the course of study in the form of certificates. 

Restricted admission

Admission to the Master's Degree Programme in General Education is restricted.

There is no waiting list for the Master's degree in General Education.

Selection criteria

If the number of qualified applicants to the degree programme exceeds the number of places, an academic assessment committee will be appointed to select applicants on the basis of the following criteria:

1. Average mark for qualifying course of study. The average mark is calculated at the time of the application. Read more about calculating average marks.

NB: A qualifying average mark (GPA) is no longer calculated as the average mark is included in the overall assessment.

2. Description of educational relevance. The academic assessment committee assesses the applicants on the basis of an enclosed description of educational relevance as well as documentation in the form of certificate/transcript of records, academic regulations (if any) and any further documentation at Bachelor's and/or Master's degree level. What does a description of educational relevance contain?

Admission to Emdrup or Aarhus?

The Master's degree programmes in educational psychology, educational sociology, education science and general education are offered in both Emdrup and Aarhus. You can create an application for admission to these Master's degree programmes in both Emdrup and Aarhus. If you do so, you will be asked to state which degree programme/study location is your first priority when submitting your second application. You CANNOT decide yourself whether you want to be admitted to Emdrup or Aarhus. This is determined on the basis of the priorities you have stated for degree programmes/study locations to which you have applied for admission and the selection of applications to the Master's degree programmes in the two locations. Please note that even though you apply for admission to the same degree programme in both study locations, there is no guarantee of admission to the programme.

Before creating an application for admission to both Emdrup and Aarhus, you should decide whether you really want to study in, for example, Aarhus if you live on Zealand (or vice versa). If you feel that it would not be realistic for you to attend courses in one of the locations, we advise you to apply for one priority only. It is very difficult to transfer from one location to another, so we strongly recommend that you do not apply for admission to both locations in the expectation that you will be able to transfer to the other location at a later date.

Transfer to a different study location is only possible if:

  • There are vacant places in the year group in question. We admit more students than the predefined number of places on our degree programmes because we expect a certain drop-out rate during the course of study. So there will probably be very few vacant places, or perhaps even none at all.
  • As a general rule, it is not possible to be transferred, before you have passed the first academic year. The university may, however, grant an exemption, if there is considered to be unusual factors.

Transfer

It is not possible to apply for transfer from other Master's degree programmes to the Master's Degree Programme in General Education.

Programme structure

The Master’s degree programme comprises 120 ECTS and involves two years of full-time study. The first three semesters are divided into modules, some of which are compulsory while others are elective. On the fourth semester, students write their Master’s thesis.

Your chance to leave your mark

A degree programme at the Department of Education is not a pre-packaged deal. As a student, you have plenty of scope to shape your degree programme and make it fit your own particular needs and interests.

Student guidance is the cornerstone of our approach, but you should also be prepared to look for knowledge yourself, choose your own path through the programme and collaborate with others. In short, we’ll be testing your knowledge, your attitudes and your ability to present valid arguments. In other words: Education is not something you will be given, it is something you will have to take.

Spend your time wisely

Timetabled teaching constitutes only a small part of an academic programme. This means that on a day-to-day basis you’re largely free to plan your own study activities.

On this Master’s degree programme you might only have teaching a couple of times a week, but you should anticipate a much larger workload. So you should think very carefully about how much paid work you take on in addition to your studies. And if you’ve got a family, it might also be a good idea to involve them in the planning process.

Communities and networking

The academic and social environments are closely connected at the university. Study groups form the basis of both academic exchanges and social activities.

Your fellow students come from a wide range of educational backgrounds, and many of them also have experience of the job market. Not only will you make new friends; you will also establish a solid professional network that you can draw on – even after you have finished the programme.

Job functions for grads

This data is derived from AU's 2013/2014 employment survey. This data should not be considered a completely accurate representation of the labour market and job functions for all graduates of the individual degree programmes. It exclusively represent the responses submitted to the survey in the years in question.

The programme emphasises the development of critical reflective thinking that can be translated into problems relevant to practice. The programme will enable students on the basis of research independently to: 

  • identify, formulate, analyse and assess educational problems and position them in their socio-cultural contexts
  • carry out studies and develop professional solutions
  • take part in the development of educational practice and educational institutions.

Students develop social and communication competences with the aim of being able to participate in and develop cross-disciplinary and multicultural collaboration.

The objective of the programme is to prepare students to work in theory and practice development functions within the field of education, including work with teaching, development projects, management, teaching planning, supervision, guidance, assessment and consultancy, as well as to participate in research contexts on the basis of the understanding gained of research work and research ethics.

The programme may furthermore form the basis for the three-year research training programme leading to a PhD.
