Admission to the Master's programme in Arab and Islamic Studies

IMPORTANT!

New online application system
Aarhus University is in the process of developing a new common online application system effective from the 2012 intake. We expect to launch our new system from 1 February 2012.

We do not accept applications for Master’s degree programmes until this system is implemented. All paper applications received will be rejected and returned to sender. Our current self-service application system cannot be used either.

Admission information
Our application pages will be updated from now until February 2012. Thus, in the time ahead, you may notice we are making a mess – for which we apologise. Specific information about admission requirements, selection criteria, documentation requirements, etc. will be moved to the individual admission pages to be found in the Study Guide. When we open for applications from 1 February 2012, all admission pages will be up-to-date.

Application deadline

  • 1 March for commencement of studies 1 September

Application form

You must send TWO copies of your application, including all appendices and a priority form in each appliation:

  • One copy for the administration office (the "original").
  • One copy (completely identical) has to be an “easy to scan version”: This means it cannot be divided in any way; have no holes, hold no stamps, clips, staples, tape, post-it notes, etc. All papers must be same (A4) size. It is fine to print on both sides of the paper. Please keep all papers together using only a plastic folder.
  • Diplomas sent to you by an educational institution must be removed from the sealed envelope (even though you are not normally supposed to to this), attached to your application and also provided as a copy. The broken envelope may be attached to the "original" application as proof.
  • The "easy to scan" copy will be inserted into the scanner without further processing. If all your documents are not included in this copy, they will not be filed, saved and assessed as documentation. Applications without an identical copy will not be processed.
  • You must submit two copies (complete "original" + complete identical copy) for each of the programmes you apply for.

Academic skills and qualifications

(1) The programme's lines A, B and D comprise course units to a value of 120 ECTS-credits in Arab and Islamic Studies.

(2) ECTS-credits measure the weight of the individual exam or course in relation to the workload of a full-time student. 60 credits correspond to full-time studies during one academic year.

(3) The programme's line C comprises course units to a value of 60 ECTS-credits in Arab and Islamic Studies combined with course units to a maximum value of 60 ECTS-credits in a subsidiary subject covered in the curriculum subjects of Danish Upper Secondary Schools.

The aim of the Master's programme is:

- to enable students to improve their academic knowledge and skills, to increase their theoretical and methodological qualifications, and to develop their academic independence above and beyond the Bachelor's level
- to provide students with an opportunity for in-depth study through the application of advanced elements of the disciplines and methods of the field(s) of study, including experience in academic study and research methods which further develops students' qualifications for fulfilling more specific vocational functions and for participating in scholarly development

The Master's degree programme in Arab and Islamic Studies provides students with an opportunity to study a selection of subject areas within the field of study at an academic level which requires a Bachelor's degree. The choice of subject areas must relate to the specific qualifications and skills achieved by the student in the course of his or her Bachelor's degree programme. Students whose entry Bachelor's degree programme does not include Arab and Islamic Studies as its central subject or elective must make individual application for admission through the Board of Studies, stating reasons.

New times at au.dk/en

The university’s website is being redesigned. The design and content will therefore change, and you may experience for a while that old and new sections are mixed together, and that the content is not in its usual place.

We hope that the new website will make up for any inconvenience, and that you will enjoy greater coherence throughout and find the website simpler to use.

Why are we making a mess?

In the time ahead, you will notice a mixture of old and new designs in the pages on the website.

In spring 2011, Aarhus University’s nine main academic areas were reduced to four, and the fifty-five departments became twenty-six. This was to unify the organisation and to strengthen the university’s interdisciplinary approach. We are now following suit by restructuring the entire website to ensure more coherence in the content and design.

Such an exercise takes time – and we hope you will bear with us!

Take a short cut

Under the HOT KEY at the top right, you can find links to the most frequently used content on the website, as well as the two new universes for staff and students.

Where can I find it?

Use the new mega dropdowns to get an overview of the website’s content. They open when you run your mouse over the navigation at the top.
