Admission Requirements
General admission requirements
In general, admission to a Master’s degree programme taught in English requires successful completion of a relevant and recognised university degree equivalent to a Danish Bachelor’s degree in level and contents.
The admission requirements for a specific Master's programme are stated in the academic regulations of the programme in question, but you can also see them in our Study Guide.
Thus, to facilitate our assessment of your qualifications, you must submit documents describing the general and specific contents of your Bachelor's degree programme - preferably including descriptions of courses taken for credit - although some programmes do not require this. Please check the general and specific application pages for information about documentation requirements.

A pre-assessment of your foreign Bachelor's degree
The Danish Agency for Universities and Internationalisation provides assessments of non-Danish degrees, diplomas and certificates and information about international recognition of qualifications.
The assessment offered by the Danish Agency for Universities and Internationalisation is a brief statement saying what your foreign qualification corresponds to in Denmark: Which educational level and, if possible, which field of education.
A pre-assessment of your foreign Bachelor's degree made by the Danish Agency for Universities and Internationalisation will improve your application. However, the decision regarding admission to specific Master's degree programmes is made by Aarhus University in accordance with the academic regulations.
Restricted admission
Some Master’s degree programmes have restricted admission, which means only a limited number of slots are available. For those programmes, only the most highly qualified applicants will be selected for admission according to the selection criteria announced. In case of restricted admission, the number of available slots and the selection criteria used will appear from the specific admission pages of the Study Guide.
If you receive a conditional offer of admission to a Master's degree programme with restricted admission, the deadline for submitting additional documentation that you meet the admission requirements is 1 July. If you do not meet this deadline, your admission offer will be cancelled.
Students already holding a Master's degree
Students who have already obtained a Master’s degree (according to Danish standards) can apply for admission to Master’s degree programmes with restricted admission, but if the number of applicants exceeds the number of available slots, these applicants will always be given lowest priority for selection among all the other applicants, even those less highly academically qualified for admission.
General English language requirements ('English B level')
According to the Danish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education's Order no 213 of 21 February 2012 on Admission to Danish Universities, all applicants with non-Danish examinations to English language Master's programmes must document English language qualifications comparable to an 'English B level' in the Danish upper secondary school ('gymnasium') .
English language qualifications comparable to an 'English B level' in Denmark can be documented as follows:
- TOEFL test results of at least 560 (paper-based test) or 83 (internet-based test)
The Aarhus University TOEFL code is 8935
The AU Herning TOEFL code is 8607
The test result must not be more than two years old - IELTS test with a minimum score of 6.5 points
The test result must not be more than two years old - Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CEA)
The test result must not be more than two years old - "C1 level" obtained by examination from a CEFR-validated English language course.
- English-taught entrance examination (upper secondary school/high school) or Bachelor’s degree
- Danish/Nordic entrance examination with an English level the Danish Agency for Universities and Internationalisation considers comparable to a Danish B/A level in English.
It is possible to apply for admission before you have taken your English language test. Instead you must submit documentation that you have signed up for a test. When you sign up for an IELTS or TOEFL test, you should also ask the test institution to send your test results to AU.
Your test result must be uploaded using our online application system. In June 2012, you may request for access to your online application (by sending an email to admission@au.dk). When you have been given access, you must upload your test result before 1 July.
If you are considered academically qualified for admission, you will receive a letter of admission conditioned on the submission of a sufficient test score not later than 1 July.
